I've been relegating running to my 'only when it's too rainy to do anything else' workout. Seems I should be incorporating it with a bit more frequency.

Still don't love it, but today was rather nice. I managed to get my run in before the rain hit, and though my pace was a bit *meh* (3 miles in 34 minutes: zombie shuffle, indeed) the trail was all but empty and smelled deliciously of autumn leaves and late-cut hay fields.

Not sure what to do tomorrow. I'm teaching again, as I did this morning and will again on Saturday, but having slacked off two days this week I really can't afford to again. Hiking would be all right, were it not to rain without cease. Had I a working bicycle, I could knock off a good ten miles. Obviously skating is out... unless I go to the Palisades Mall and hit the ice rink. And I need to get gloves and earrings and stuff to supplement my Prom Party outfit (in case you're wondering, I got kick ass faux-leather black buckle boots that I can wear to the party AND with my pirate costume the following weekend at MDRF), so it would be a one-stop trip.

Which leads me to my next bit of exercise worry... what do I do when winter hits? Don is convinced I should take up skiing, despite never having done it before. I'm thinking I need to ice skate a LOT, but I have to drive a distance to do so... though this does make me want to find an adult figure skating class geared toward the clumsy and chronically inflexible. If I can master even a halting Salchow, I can die happy.

No triple axels, though. Have we learned nothing from ICE CASTLES?

Today has been A Day.

It all began at 4 a.m. and the sound of a kitty retching. It was Handsome Tom. Yes, I can tell just by the sound which kitty is getting sick. It’s good to have skills. Bleary eyed, I stumbled out of bed, snagged a roll of paper towels and a spray bottle of cleaner and set out to find the site of the evacuation.

My semi-epic list of Things To Be Done is not, in fact, done. I'm not overly fussed. I got in a good workout and managed a fair small but detail-oriented amount of housework.

Today was an early class (teaching, not taking) and then general maintenance/manning the desk at the gym. I'd every intention of going for a walk/run when I got home, but my muscles were tired and sore. I could have pushed it. Almost did. Then I decided that there was no shame in giving myself a day of recovery. I'll take the early kickboxing class tomorrow and, if all goes well, go for that walk/run later in the day.

As for the sensible eating... hmm. For a while there (read: several months) my habits were flat out awful. I was eating whatever struck my fancy and far too much of it. This week I've made better choices. Mind, homemade guacamole three times in five days was not the wisest meal choice, but at least it was loaded with tomato and onion. And cilantro, which is green, so it must be good for me. Tonight it's black bean soup and a big ol' salad, tomorrow it's leftover veggie chili and brown rice.

Gardening update in the near future! To give you a preview: my perennials have come back beautifully (I am ridiculously excited), I think I planted the first of my tomatoes too early and my peas and strawberries too late. Also, I don't know what other veggies and herbs I should plant.

p.s. slugs squick me no end. ::shudder::

Despite my best intentions, I didn't make it to kickboxing today. I'm teaching early tomorrow morning, but after that I'll take Donna's class. I did get my lazy butt on the treadmill for about 35 minutes, about half of which I ran. Lame, I know, but it's still better than noting.

When I got back to the house, I had a message from Don that he'd be super late tonight. I scrapped my original dinner plans and decided to scrounge. Thing is, nothing was appealing. I've been eating lentil soup leftovers for four days. It's yummy, to be sure, but I grow weary. I poked through the freezer, the pantry, the recesses of the fridge, but everything seemed like too much work. At last I unearthed a slightly soft red bell pepper, a somewhat withered knob of ginger, and a (mostly) sturdy broccoli crown. Onions and garlic from the pantry, chicken breast I'd bought earlier this week... oh, yeah. Stir fry! With whole wheat couscous, 'cause I was too impatient to wait on brown rice.

Crimson Pirate-wise, things continue well. We had a rather productive rehearsal yesterday. Don's crazy work schedule precluded his attendance, so we were without his drumtastic awesomeness. I think we muddled along well enough, but every time I had to pick up the bodhran to cover for him I felt - so very keenly - my comparative lack of skill. We've got some good stuff in the works. [livejournal.com profile] crimsontom has an adorable song on it's feet. Dan has three new songs under way, Ann has two (three?). Robin has one or two. There are a whole lot of group songs, too, and a two that really showcase our female vocals. I continue to fail at finding harmonies and am pathetically grateful when someone offers one up to me. I can learn them. I just can't hear them.

Finally, a note to myself: sucky weather and kitty trauma and extra shifts at work are no excuse. You have to get to phototherapy thrice weekly or you won't get better. In fact, you'll get worse. Which is, at this moment, abundantly clear. Also, eat less and exercise more. silly cow.

The latter first- I really didn't want to go for a walk/run today, but since I work tomorrow and have rehearsals and/or meetings for the next two evenings (AND I'll be in PA for the faire this weekend...) I needed to get my butt moving. I did a shorter route, just three miles. But this is the thing- I ran most of it. I walked a bit, ran a mile, walked a bit, ran another mile, etc. So I did probably 2.25-2.5 miles running, and the rest walking. I was immensely proud... and rather surprised. I wasn't breaking any speed records, mind you. Even so... happy!

Then I came home and made a crustless crab and swiss quiche with a tossed salad partnered with a homemade balsamic/dijon vinaigrette. Yum!!!!!!! I also have another crockpot meal a-brewing; I figure I'll need it to feed Don for lunch on Thursday. What is it about good food that just makes me so happy?

Stupid Body

Cramps. Bloating. Gastrointestinal distress. Bouts of weeping. Ah, I do so love this time of the month.

Ah, but the title of this entry does not just refer to body-stupidity beyond my control. No, indeed! I have Exercise and Fitness issues as well. I've been really bad for the past four days. I ate badly this weekend, and then did not work out on Sunday, Monday OR yesterday. Today I was determined to remedy that. As it was a beautiful autumn afternoon, I decided to forego my normal bout on the treadmill and walk outside instead. Then, greatly horrified by the hypnotic jiggling of my thighs, I thought I would run instead. See, I've been doing pretty well on the treadmill. (I can do a 10 minute mile (not bad, for an old-ish mostly out-of-shape creaky thing) Running outside is different. I can NOT pace myself properly. This I know. I also go far faster than I should if I want to keep an even pace for an extended distance.

I compromised. I walked for a bit, ran for a bit, and so on. I did three and a half miles in forty minutes, so I guess that's all right. Thighs are still jiggling merrily about, though. So much for a miracle cure! Sadly, I did half expect that the problem would be resolved by the time I reached home. *sigh*

Now it's off to chug some water and make an Atkins friendly dinner.

I am having a glass of wine (red, of course) to accompany the season premiere of Angel. I am, I say!
